Accessibility

This statement covers kalkmancode.co.uk. I want the site to be usable by everybody who comes to it, and I would rather write down where it falls short than claim it is perfect.

What I aim at

I build against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 at level AA. I have not had the site independently audited, so treat that as the target I work to rather than a certified result.

What is in place

• A skip link to the main content as the first thing you reach with a keyboard.
• Every page reachable and operable by keyboard, with a visible focus outline.
• One heading structure per page, in order, with landmarks for the header, navigation, main content and footer.
• Text sized in relative units, so it reflows when you zoom or enlarge it in your browser.
• Decorative icons hidden from screen readers rather than read out as noise.
• The animated background stops if your device asks for reduced motion, and it is decorative — nothing is only conveyed by it.
• No cookie banner, no pop-ups, no interstitials and no adverts to dismiss.
• Fonts served from this domain, so pages render without waiting on anybody else.

What I know is imperfect

The site is built as a single-page application, so moving between pages changes the content without a full page load. Focus and scroll return to the top on each move, but some screen readers announce that change less clearly than a conventional page load.

The lime accent is used for emphasis and for links. It carries no meaning on its own, but if colour is hard for you to make out and something reads ambiguously, tell me and I will change it rather than explain it.

I will reply within five working days, and if it is something I can fix I will fix it rather than add it to a roadmap.
